Description

Roosevelt Academy is a small-scale International Liberal Arts and Sciences University College, based in Middelburg in the southwest of the Netherlands. The full-time program leads to a degree awarded by the renowned Utrecht University. The official language of the Academy is English and approximately one third of the 600-strong student body is non-Dutch. The method of instruction is intensive and highly interactive, with classes never larger than 25. All students are assigned a personal tutor who will guide them throughout their studies.

Curriculum Overview

Students are required to take 24 courses in six semesters (= three years) in order to obtain either a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree, awarded by Utrecht University. Courses offered range from a wide variety of disciplines, including anthropology, antiquity, chemistry, economics, French, German, geography, history, international law, life sciences, linguistics, mathematics, music and drama, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, rhetoric, sociology, Spanish, and many more.

Students choose a major at the end of their first year and have the option of also taking a minor in another discipline.

Student Life

The RA campus is in fact the inner city of Middelburg. Right in the town’s historical center, overlooking the market square, is the main teaching hall (formerly known as the Stadhuis, the town hall) which also houses staff and faculty members.
The Franklin, Eleanor and Theodore buildings form the center of RA. The laboratories for the Sciences are located in Vlissingen, which is only 4 miles away from Middelburg. Our university library (Zeeuwse Bibliotheek) is located nearby as well.

The RA campus is easy to reach by bus or bicycle, and is also within walking distance from the train station.
All cultural, social, academic and recreational facilities in Middelburg are available to RA students. Campus activities are organized throughout the year by RASA, the Roosevelt Academy Student Association, and its affiliated clubs (sports, debating, art, etc, etc.)

Financial Aid

TEST - As part of a public university, the tuition fee for the Roosevelt Academy, and all Dutch universities, is fixed at 1,519 EURO (2006-2007 academic year). Dutch students qualify for Studiefinanciering (student grant). Depending on national regulations, many EU students can also receive maintenance grants from their own governments. For more information, please visit the IB-Groep website.

American students should note that Roosevelt Academy is part of Utrecht University, which has been approved for Federal Financial Aid for American Students (FAFSA, FFEL). This means you can apply for a federal loan while studying at Roosevelt Academy or Utrecht University. For more information you can contact FAFSA.

Housing

Unlike most other university cities in the Netherlands, Roosevelt Academy students are guaranteed accommodation throughout their three-year stay in Middelburg. Currently, there are three main student dormitories: at The Bagijnhof and at the Vlissingsestraat in the center of town, and at The Roggeveenhuis, which is located ten minutes from campus. In the near future, more student housing will be made available. At the Bagijnhof 180 rooms are available for our students. They live together in one house with 10 to 16 students who each have their own room but who share a common living room, kitchen and bathroom facilities. The Roggeveenhuis counts 122 one and two-persons apartments. Students have their own room, bathroom and kitchen. Contrary to the Bagijnhof dorms, students with a Dutch nationality who live in the Roggeveenhuis can apply for a so-called huurtoeslag.
