Description

Northern Caribbean University is a Seventh-day Adventist, English-speaking University. It is located on a two-hundred-acre property two miles south of the town of Mandeville, Manchester, Jamaica. It is owned and operated by the West Indies Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, which has its headquarters in Mandeville. The University is a private, four-year, co-educational, liberal-arts institution, offering a number of professional, pre-professional and vocational programmes and is the only multi-disciplinary tertiary institution serving rural Jamaica. Students are accepted for both the August and January semesters. The deadlines for applications are May 31 and October 31 respectively. We boast a student population of over 5,000, and a work force of over 500. Our campus is a diverse place as we have individuals from approximately thirty five (35) countries who work and study.

Student Life

The University has high standards and we are proud of our philosophy. There are a number of clubs on campus that students can become involved in. The aim of many of these clubs is community outreach and preparing students for the challenges that are present in the society in which we live. Upon completion of registration each student becomes a part of an ACADEMIC CLUB. There are also social clubs that students are free to become a part of. Some of these organizations include: football, netball, volley ball, and cricket clubs. We also have a vast array of choirs that students can become involved in. As a Seventh-day Adventist Institution, we promote a healthy lifestyle. This includes a vegetarian diet. We also adhere to the principles of the Bible that deal with dressing modestly, as a result, jewelry is not allowed. Northern Caribbean University prides itself in its outstanding faculty, quality facilities, the distinctive service provided to its students, and the number of vocational, pre-professional and professional degrees that we offer.

Financial Aid

Vision Statement

To every student who comes to NCU the office of Student Aid, through prayer and its best efforts, is committed to helping them turn their dreams into reality.

Mission Statement

Divinely mandated to ensure that every student is financially enabled to access the brand of education offered at NCU through grants, scholarships, public and private, work/study, resources while preserving requisite academic and work ethic standards, to make them excellent ambassadors for NCU and for God.

Justification

In even what might be considered inhumane societies there are what we might broadly refer to as welfare programmes. Albeit that many of these programmes will be very highly politicized in certain places. Notwithstanding, however, it seems a measure of humanity that there should always be such machinery in place. And so it would be remiss of us not to have a system of aid in place at NCU. It is out of this keen sense of humanity that the Administration has decided that there should be an office called Student Aid.

Housing

Our main campus provides accommodation for those who are desirous of living on campus. We have three (3) dormitories, two (2) female and one (1) male. The department of Student Development assists students with finding living accommodations if they choose not to reside on campus. Residences are rented to students, by members of the community, at a reasonable cost. Those who have the desire to live off campus must be at least 18 years of age, and preferably be familiar with the environs. It is recommended that 1st year students live on campus.
The University also has its own Day Care Centre, Early Childhood Facility and Primary School.
